Whether you’ll be visiting Aix-en-Provence for the first time, or you’ve already been to this City of 1000 Fountains before, taking a walking tour is a fun way to get a local’s perspective while learning about the history of the magnificent sights that greet you at every turn.
For example, the Place des Prêcheurs is one of the most lively pedestrian areas in the city, with charming cafés, outdoor markets, street entertainers, and breathtaking historical landmarks all existing in harmony. But did you know that in the 1600’s it was the setting for punishment of criminals? Thankfully there is not much risk of stumbling upon a public hanging these days, but the echos of the past remain just waiting to be revealed.
Visiting Aix-en-Provence Any Time of Year
No matter what season you’re planning on visiting Aix-en-Provence, you’re in for a wonderful experience! Many people may not realize that although the Provence region is known for its warm Mediterranean climate, it’s usually pretty cold from November to February, especially when the mistral winds are passing through the area. But Aix-en-Provence enjoys plenty of sunshine, so even when it’s cold, the crisp azure sky and Montagne Sainte-Victoire on the horizon collide for a stunning backdrop for sightseeing.
Each season is special in its own way for visiting Aix-en-Provence. Winter is chilly but also sunny and beautiful, with lots to do especially around the holidays. In spring, the days become noticeably longer and more mild, and you can feel the ever-present vibrancy of the city blossoming alongside nature’s renewal. Summers in Aix are everything you’d expect! Warm (and hot) temperatures, tons of activities and performances to enjoy, and outdoor cafés filled with people enjoying each other’s company amidst the stunning surroundings of the city.
As much as I appreciate the uniqueness of all the seasons, fall is perhaps my favorite. The peak summer tourist crowds have gently faded, hotel and flight costs are typically less expensive, and the weather is still warm enough for shorts during the day and light sweaters in the evenings. What’s not to love?! You’ll find comfort and space in which to discover all that Aix-en-Provence has to offer.
