I had the opportunity join a private viewing of the Raoul Dufy Exhibit at Hôtel de Caumont Art Centre in Aix-en-Provence with master paintings by French Fauvist artist (b1877-d1953). The exhibition, titled “A passion for colour”, featured more than ninety of his works on loan from the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris and ran through September 18th, 2022. Although Dufy began as an impressionist and later dabbled in cubism, he’s most famous for his Fauvist technique of broad brush strokes with a bold use of color, and evolved his remarkable talent and influences (including Paul Cézanne) into his own unique style.
I highly recommend the Hôtel de Caumont as a must-do experience while you visit Aix-en-Provence. As you enter to stroll the galleries, be sure to take notice of the building’s craft work which was meticulously renovated in 2013. Then consider having lunch in the elegant dining room or perhaps pause for reflection on your walking tour of Aix-en-Provence with an evening glass of wine in the outdoor courtyard.
